The Polar Bear Plunge is one of the most popular events of the Southampton holiday season. Hundreds of plungers jump into the chilly water of the Atlantic Ocean to support those in need. On a Saturday morning in early December, hearty plungers gather at Cooper’s Beach in Southampton Village, many wearing festive costumes or joining teams to show their support. The enthusiasm and excitement build as plungers await the boom of the canon signaling the start time. Then, in a wave of cheers from friends and family, they run for the water. Members of the local fire, ambulance, and ocean water rescue departments and surfers are on hand to make sure all are safe. Participants and fans enjoy hot drinks and food in the Cooper’s Beach Pavilion after the plunge. And all plungers get a special PBP hat.
Since the first Polar Bear Plunge in 2004, the event has raised more than $700,000 to support HOH and its programs to help the needy on eastern Long Island. All you have to do to join the fun is sign up and collect pledges of support from your family and friends. Watch for information on the next Polar Bear Plunge and join us for an exhilarating leap into the holiday spirit. We guarantee it will warm your heart. C’mon. We dare you!
Where do the funds go?
Money raised by the annual Polar Bear Plunge goes directly to support programs that help the needy in our community. Your participation helps us stock our pantry shelves with healthy food, keep our free used clothing room organized, and offer emergency assistance to families, senior citizens and veterans. It’s a fun way to give back to your community and help those who are struggling to make ends meet. Your support can help provide summer lunches for needy school children, send a cooked meal to a homebound or isolated resident, buy a pair of glasses for a local school child, fill a medical prescription, install a wheelchair ramp for a handicapped person, or brighten the holidays for a family with little to celebrate. Each year HOTH helps more than 6,000 people through are many outreach programs. Help us make your community a healthier, happier place for all.
